Data protection provider Druva has launched what is says is the market’s first eDiscovery enablement solution for files stored on enterprise endpoints. The new solution comes as an upgrade to Druva's popular inSync endpoint data protection and governance platform.

With the new capabilities, inSync can simplify eDiscovery by enabling organizations to identify endpoint content and custodians across all enterprise-owned devices, as well as employee-owned devices. The system can capture and place legal holds on relevant data, and support ingestion into eDiscovery systems for review and analysis.

Druva estimates that the new functionality will dramatically reduce eDiscovery costs, which are expected to surge from $5.5 billion in 2013 to $9.8 billion by 2017. The new features also extend inSync’s governance and compliance capabilities with mobile device management (MDM) and the ability to track the location and movement of all endpoint data across devices and users through a central repository.

These features are especially important in today's world of BYOD (bring your own device), where employees and other enterprise users can have data stored on and transmitted over a variety of personal devices.

Mobility Challenges

Druva CEO Jaspreet Singh talks about the challenge for enterprises when eDiscovery is necessary. The mobile nature and computing habits of today's mobile workforce, he explains, place a difficult burden on enterprises in terms of securing, accessing, and sometimes even locating endpoint data that can be distributed across thousands of end user devices.

"These challenges undermine litigation preparedness because of the absence of a unified record of endpoint data and clear audit trails, which in turn make it extremely costly to identify and capture the data for eDiscovery," said Singh.

The new data governance enhancements built into Druva's inSync software are intended to streamline the eDiscovery process by using the platform's endpoint data-capture and traceability functions. The system also provides specific tools to enable rapid response to legal requests.

Compliance and Backup Challenges

Data protection analyst Jason Buffington at Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) reports that 'Improving Data Backup' and 'Regulatory Compliance' are among the top investments planned by IT decision makers in 2014. However, not everyone understands how much important data is stored on endpoint devices as opposed to being stored on enterprise servers.

"Governance features like compliance and eDiscovery need to be an integral part of the endpoint data protection strategy," Buffington said. "Being able to deploy these functions within an integrated system simplifies the IT infrastructure, lowers IT administration costs, and expedites compliance and discovery processes."

New inSync eDiscovery Features

Key eDiscovery controls now available as part of inSync’s governance module include federated search, legal holds, eDiscovery system ingestion, and legal administrator role support.

With 'federated search', inSync can now identify the location of litigation-related files, including all file versions, deleted files, and those belonging to former employees.

The 'legal holds' functionality enables appropriate IT staffers to quickly respond to legal department inquiries by placing legal holds on collected data, suspending retention policies, and preserving the content in place until it can be reviewed.

New features for 'eDiscovery system ingestion' enable a legal administrator to review and expose data for ingestion when the held data is ready for transfer into an eDiscovery system.

Other new features for the 'legal administrator' allow specialized access and privileges that enable legal departments to place, review and remove legal holds.

Some other interesting enhancements in the latest version of inSync include CloudCache backup, group file sharing, and wizard-based updates.

The high performance 'CloudCache' backup features include restore, device refreshes, and legal holds for large data volume, cloud-based deployments. This functionality uses an on-site server to send data to the cloud service on a set schedule to help reduce impact on enterprise WAN bandwidth.

The file sharing support for groups and teams includes use of a persistent alias for easy sharing among all members, as well as dedicated shared-folder for each group’s needs.

In addition, the wizard-based device refresh and OS migration features for end users help simplify self-serve data restore to new devices, operating systems and platforms. This saves hours of IT overhead by enabling users to repopulate their files simply by logging onto their device.
