With the dog days of summer now past, the season bringing a new generation of flagship smartphones is rapidly approaching. And the coming season promises to be a big one, with the arrival of Apple's 10th anniversary iPhone, Google's new Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, and the just-unveiled Samsung Galaxy Note 8.
While new iPhones are typically launched in September, design and supply issues are expected to delay the next star in Apple's lineup until later this year. However, a French technology site reported yesterday that the next iPhone, likely to be named the iPhone Edition rather than the iPhone 8, could debut on Sept. 12, with the device hitting the market on Sept. 22.
Meanwhile, Google appears set to unveil its second-generation Pixel smartphones on Oct. 5, according to a leak revealed on Twitter yesterday by mobile tech writer Evan Blass. The new handsets will be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 836 systems-on-chip, according to Blass.
New Multi-Window Mode on Galaxy Note 8
For now, one smartphone launch is more certain than the rest: the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 (pictured above). Officially revealed yesterday at Samsung's Unpacked event in New York City, the Galaxy Note 8 is available for pre-ordering today.
Set to hit stores on Sept. 15, Samsung's latest smartphone will feature a large, 6.3-inch Super AMOLED "Infinity Display" with curved edges and minimal bezels at the top and bottom. The large display makes the Galaxy Note 8 "the ultimate multitasking smartphone," Samsung said.
A new "App Pair" feature will enable users to launch two apps at once, making it possible to, for example, watch a video on one half of the screen while texting a friend on the other half.
The Galaxy Note 8, which can be used with an improved S pen for writing and drawing, will also come with dual rear 12-megapixel cameras, advanced wireless charging, water and dust resistance, the intelligent digital assistant Bixby, and built-in biometric security with both iris and fingerprint scanning.
Available in midnight black and orchid gray, the Galaxy Note is priced starting at $929 for an unlocked version. Samsung is offering customers who buy the phone between now and Sept. 24 either a free Samsung Gear 360 camera or a free 128 GB memory card and the convertible fast wireless charging pad.
French Carriers: iPhone 8 Arriving in September
After months of speculation that the iPhone 8 could arrive as late as December, the French site Mac4Ever reported yesterday that Apple will launch its flagship in the usual September time frame. Mac4Ever said the Sept. 12 launch had been confirmed by several mobile service operators, which typically need ample time to prepare to pre-sell and market new devices.
While site said it couldn't confirm the date on which the iPhone 8, as well as the iPhone 7s and 7s Plus, will actually become available in stores, it added that Sept. 22 seemed "very likely," as Apple typically releases new products on Fridays.
Like Samsung's newest phone, the iPhone 8 is also expected to carry a hefty price tag of over $1,000. However, a new survey by Fluent suggests that won't be a deterrent for Apple fans, who show much greater loyalty to the brand than do Samsung device owners.
Not many details are yet available for Google's coming Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. However, reports so far indicate the devices will also feature a "premium" price tag, but not the bezel-free front display seen on Apple's and Samsung's latest phones.
