Samsung has announced the chip that will almost certainly power the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus when they launch in the coming months. Called the Exynos 9810, it's the firms new chipset for flagship mobile devices, following on from the Exynos 8895 it used in the Galaxy S8 and Note 8.

It promises greater intelligence and a host of new features for devices which include it (we're looking at you, Galaxy S9, S9 Plus and Note 9), with some key functionality set to challenge the iPhone X.

One such feature is "a depth sensing feature to scan user's face in 3D for face tracking filters as well as strong security when unlocking a device with one's face."

If that sounds awfully familiar, then you're not wrong, as it's pretty much describing the Face ID and Animoji features you'll find on Apple's latest top smartphone.

Faster Downloads, Smoother 4K Video

Like Qualcomm's flagship Snapdragon 845 chipset announced last month, the Exynos 9810 also boasts impressive internet speeds.

It supports CAT 18 LTE networks and download speeds of up to 1.2Gbps -- although in real-life terms your peak rates will be significantly lower than this.

One of the standout features however is its video capture capabilities. The Exynos 9810 will be able to record 4K footage at 120fps - which beats both the iPhone X and the Snapdragon 845 which can achieve 60fps at a 4K resolution.

While the jump to 120fps will make a difference when playing back video normally -- things will be a touch smoother versus 60fps recordings -- the higher frame rate will also allow for slow motion.

That means you may be able to capture slow motion video at a staggering 4K resolution on the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus, although this particular feature is yet to be confirmed.

Samsung also claims the Exynos 9810 will improve photography, gaming and security -- so the firm's next generation flagship smartphones should be well equipped.
