Since releasing its BB10, BlackBerry has been having a hard time in the smartphone market. Now, it has announced its largest phone ever in an attempt to boost sales. The BlackBerry Z30 boasts a 5-inch screen and a large capacity battery which can last as much as two days according to BlackBerry.
With a potential buyout deal still on the horizon, some believe that BlackBerry's entire handset division could be shutdown in the event of an acquisition. However, without a buyout occurring so far, the Z30 will be BlackBerry's latest attempt to try and make a dent in the Android/iOS dominated market.
BlackBerry Z30 Boosts Stock
As a result of the Z30 announcement, which provided release date information suggesting a full release next week, BlackBerry's share value has increased by 1 percent. The Z30 is BlackBerry's next flagship device and will take over that position from the Z10.
At the announcement event, which took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, BlackBerry revealed that the Z30 will have a 1.7 gigahertz processor. Outside of the size and processor information, BlackBerry did not talk a whole lot about what exactly will make the Z30 special and allow it to compete against the iPhone 5s and various Android devices.
Along with the Z30, BlackBerry is updating its smartphone operating system to BlackBerry 10.2. This update is said to include hundreds of new features and tweaks. Among the changes is the ability to use the new "priority hub," which puts emails and other information deemed "important" into one easily accessible area.
Lack Of Apps
Out of all the issues that are present with BlackBerry and its new smartphones, the biggest may be a lack of available applications. This is the same issue that Windows Phone devices face and has prevented both types of phones from receiving the same amount of attention as the iPhone or Galaxy S4.
BlackBerry 10 phones have done well in some regions but where sales really count -- in the US and China -- BlackBerry has accounted for less than 2 percent of all smartphones sold. BlackBerry simply is not appealing to big name developers, according to various analysts, mainly because BlackBerry has decided to venture into the market by itself and has not partnered with many mainstream technology companies for its software.
According to some market research, only 34 percent of the top 102 apps are found on BlackBerry 10. Even Windows Phone 8 outdoes BlackBerry, coming in with 64 percent. These types of statistics put BlackBerry at a disadvantage for multiple reasons.
First of all, if popular applications are not on phones then people are very unlikely to purchase the devices. Then, if people do not purchase phones, developers have less incentive to develop for the platform. This has resulted in BlackBerry struggling to find developers as well as customers who will give the BB10 a shot.
The fact is the new BlackBerry 10 devices, which have been well received by reviewers, are not being bought. However, the new Z30 may allow BlackBerry to gain some traction.
