SAP is strengthening integration between its HANA platform, analytics and mobile and business applications, and Esri's geospatial mapping technology, the two companies said in a statement on Wednesday. According to the announcement, which was made at the Esri User Conference being held this week in San Diego, the companies' objective is to increase the ease of information sharing between SAP's business applications and Esri's geographic information systems.
The new cross-functionality between SAP HANA and Esri will help business users, GIS analysts and developers who need to run complex spatial queries on large amounts of data in real-time, both companies said. One such client, Alliander, a Dutch network company, uses the two services to identify high-risk gas pipes that lie in close proximity to residential buildings in a few seconds, according to the company statement. The same analysis previously took 3-1/2 hours, said Pieter Den Hamer, big data business intelligence strategy manager for Alliander.
Enterprise Data Meets Location Data
Esri and SAP first announced they were going to work together to combine geospatial data with business data in July last year, according to Jason Stamper, analyst for Data Platforms and Analytics at 451 Research.
"Of the various integrations, the most interesting is the ability to process spatial, location and enterprise data using SAP HANA in real time, instead of having to move all of the data between GIS and operational systems," Stamper told us. "Add to that tighter integration between Esri ArcGIS and the SAP Mobile Platform so mobile staff can have apps that blend spatial and other business data, and you start to see the potential."
SAP Consulting also likely will seek to profit from the integration with SAP HANA, said Stamper, as companies are likely to need help tailoring several products to meet their particular needs.
HANA (High-Performance Analytic Appliance) is an in-memory, column-oriented, relational database management system launched in 2010. It is designed to support real-time analytics and transactional processing. Esri's ArcGIS is a geographic information system designed for working with maps and geographic information, including creating and using maps, compiling geographic data, analyzing mapped information, and managing geographic information in a database.
Extending the Mobile Platform
The announcement also includes an extension of the partnership between the two companies to include geospatial analytics from ArcGIS Online within SAP Lumira, its data visualization solution. The development will let customers leverage existing ArcGIS server and online Esri maps from within SAP's business intelligence tools.
SAP has added new integration with its mobile platform to extend geospatial data from ArcGIS to its mobile field employees as part of its Work Manager mobile app, which allows users to manipulate interactive maps and obtain information on their geographic region.
The collaboration with Esri is SAP's second announced collaboration for its HANA platform this year. In January, the company announced it would be working with SGI to launch an appliance that can run up to 24 terabytes of data in a single instance.
