Though the new Lenovo IdeaPad S300, S400 and S405 are shipping with 1366x768-pixel high-resolution screens and with Windows 7 aboard, Lenovo's latest laptops have been expressly designed to enable buyers to upgrade to Windows 8. All three models are equipped with an updated S Series' intelligent touchpad designed for Windows 8.

Lenovo has launched three new IdeaPad notebooks and two new Android Relevant Products/Services-powered IdeaTab tablets that are squarely aimed at U.S. consumers, with an additional IdeaTab model slated to debut later this year.

According to Gartner Relevant Products/Services, Lenovo has been aggressive in expanding its global reach through a series of acquisitions as well as aggressive pricing. Lenovo outperformed the global PC Relevant Products/Services market in this year's second quarter, and given the China-based company's 14.7 percent share it is well positioned to challenge PC market leader HP at 14.9 percent.

"Lenovo performed well in both the desktop and laptop Relevant Products/Services markets across all regions [and] increased shares in both the professional and consumer markets," said Mika Kitagawa, a principal analyst at Gartner.

Lenovo still trails behind the top five PC vendors in the U.S. Market, however.

"They have worked pretty hard to expand into the consumer markets outside of China, and the efforts [have] started showing positive results," Kitagawa told us Thursday.

IdeaPads Upgradable to Windows 8

Though the new IdeaPad S300, S400 and S405 are shipping with 1366x768-pixel high-resolution screens and with Windows 7 aboard, Lenovo's latest laptops have been expressly designed to enable buyers to upgrade to Windows 8. All three models are equipped with an updated S Series' intelligent touchpad Relevant Products/Services that will give users a more controlled experience when scrolling and zooming after adopting Microsoft Relevant Products/Services's next-generation OS.

The S300 and S400 models, which are under one inch in thickness and weigh less than 3.7 pounds, offer support for up to 500 GB of hard disk storage capacity. The S405, meanwhile, can accommodate up to 1 TB. Moreover, the first two models offer support for the user's choice of an Intel Core i3 or i5 processor whereas the latter model integrates AMD's A8 quad-core processor.

The S300 has a 13.3-inch display while the S400 and S405 are equipped with 14-inch screens. All three models have Wi-Fi Relevant Products/Services (802.11b/g/n) and Bluetooth radios; HDMI and USB (2.0 and 3.0) ports; and a 2-in-1 (SD/MMC) card reader. Options include a WiMAX radio for the S300 and S400 models as well as a 32 GB solid-state drive for speeding boot times on the S400 and S405. (continued...)
