We've seen tablets focused solely on enterprise users and tablets focused on media-consuming adults. Now, we're seeing the industry's first tablet focused solely on kids.
Toys R Us is following in Amazon .com's footsteps, to a certain extent, by rolling out its own tablet carrying its retail brand name. The toy seller and retail giant has introduced the first Wi-Fi tablet designed by a company that knows what kids want.
Dubbed Tabeo, the device is loaded with content that Toys R Us hopes causes kids to nag mom to buy them one. With child security in mind, the retailer also built Tabeo with safety features to make parents comfortable.
"Over the past year, we've spent considerable time talking to parents and children to determine what features and functions they really want in a kids' tablet, resulting in Tabeo," said Troy Peterson, vice president and divisional merchandise manager for Toys R Us, U.S. operations.
Tabeo will be on Toys R Us store shelves starting Oct. 21 and retail for $149.99.
A Specialty App Store
Spec-wise, Tabeo is a 7-inch, multi-touch tablet. It offers 4 GB of internal flash memory, which is expandable through a microSD slot.
Tabeo features 50 free, preinstalled apps that the retailer said it "carefully selected to entertain and educate children, while helping them explore the Internet." Toys R Us is also launching an app store for Tabeo with more than 7,000 additional free apps.
The pre-loaded apps include nearly 20 included, like Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, Cut the Rope, Temple Run, 100 Floors, Collapse!, Tiki Golf, and Tiki Cart 3D. Tabeo also features nearly 10 apps to help kids learn about letters, math, science and other subjects. Software installed on Tabeo includes AlphaTots, Discovery Kids Putterbugs, Operation Math and TechCalc, along with five more learning apps.
On the entertainment front, there are creativity, photography, cooking and activity apps, such as Putt Putt Zoo, Freddy Fish and the Stolen Shell and Camera App. Tabeo also comes with iStorybooks, Candy Factory and Little Red Riding Hood.
Parents in Control
Parents can set tailored levels of security for as many as eight users, allowing children of multiple ages to access different types of content. Tabeo's filter can be set to block 27 predetermined categories of content, and parents can choose additional sites to block and can select specific online content to unblock. (continued...)
