Barnes & Noble isn't giving up on the tablet  market. The book retailer just rolled out the Nook HD and Nook HD+, billing them as the lightest and fastest HD tablets. The Nook HD is a 7-inch tablet while the Nook HD+ spans 9 inches. The prices are $199 and $269, respectively.
William Lynch, CEO of Barnes & Noble, said the new Nooks have the highest resolution screen, lightest weight and expansive access to content rendered in a digital quality never before seen in a 7-inch tablet.
"We designed our larger format tablet NOOK HD+ because we think there's big demand from customers for a super-light, extremely high quality 9-inch tablet, at half the price of the iPad," Lynch said.
Tablet Owners Share
According to research by Barnes & Noble, more than 50 percent of tablet owners share their devices with others in their family every day. Half also say they would never let their child handle their device unattended. Not surprising, given that more than one-third of tablet owners report having content on their devices they don't want anyone else to see.
The new Nooks were designed with those realities in mind. Using Nook Profiles, the tablets provide a personalized experience for each user. By tapping on a profile at the top of the screen, the content and personal recommendations change. Adults can use personal passwords to access books, magazines, videos and apps .
What's more, a new feature called ArticleView lets you customize your online reading experience. Meanwhile, an all-new built-in e-mail app offers new features in an easy-to-use, clean format that supports popular personal and work-related e-mail services including Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync.
Specs-wise, the Nook HD has a dual-core 1.3-GHz TI OMAP 4470 processor. With its more powerful processor, Barnes & Noble is claiming the Nook HD is faster than Kindle Fire HD, with its 1.2-GHz TI OMAP 4460 processor, and 80 percent faster when it comes to graphics processing for smoother, faster animations, renderings and apps experience. The device also comes with 1 GB of RAM. The Nook HD weighs 11.1 ounces, while the Nook HD+ weighs 18.2 ounces.
Introducing Nook Video
Barnes & Noble also announced Nook Video. Nook Video will launch this fall with a lineup of blockbuster movies, classic films and original TV shows from major studios including HBO, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, STARZ, Viacom and Warner Bros. Entertainment.
Videos that are streamed and downloaded from the Nook Store will be stored in the Nook Cloud so that content can be viewed on numerous devices. Barnes & Noble also plans to launch free Nook Video apps that will let consumers stop watching content at any point and pick up where they left off on any connected device.
Beyond purchasing a digital version via Nook Video, customers can shop for DVDs and Blu-ray discs with the UltraViolet logo at Barnes & Noble and other retail stores. Those titles can then be added to the user's digital collection and instantly watched from the Nook Cloud on any connected device.
Both Nook HD and Nook HD+ will ship in late October and be available in stores in early November.
